Masters Tournament pledges $6M for new cancer facility, children's camp

The state of Georgia might soon have two National Cancer Institute designated cancer facilities. If all goes as planned, the center would be in Augusta, and you might be surprised who's footing part of the bill.

The Community Foundation for the CSRA announced Tuesday a $6 million commitment from the Masters Tournament to help fund a new cancer center and children's camp at Georgia Regents University.

"We're proud of this donation for many reasons," said Dr. Samir Khleif, director of the cancer center. "Let alone, for the trust that Augusta National, the Masters, and the community foundation have in the vision of GRU and the vision of the cancer center."

This vision includes building a facility so that all cancer related physicians and researchers can be under one roof.

"It will provide the ability to interact and build new potential innovative therapies to provide our patients," Dr. Khleif said.

While the Masters is paying some of the cost, GRU will still have to raise about another $9 million, and then the state of Georgia will release the remaining $45 million in bond funding.

"There is a fundraising campaign and that's going on currently and we're working on this with multiple and different local authorities and different donors."

Dr. Khleif says this is an eight-year project, but he is confident they will be able to raise money to needed.

The children's camp for children with disabilities and illnesses will be located in Lincoln County and will include 20 cabins, a multipurpose building for a gym, a cafeteria, meeting rooms, a swimming pool, a tennis court and a playground.

The camp will be a collaboration between the cancer center, Children's Hospital of Georgia and The Family Y of Greater Augusta.
