ETX man arrested after leading officers on county-wide chase
Released by The Commerce Police Department:
COMMERCE – A Commerce man led officers in an extensive chase through Commerce, Texas A&M Campus, Hunt County roads and Greenville.
On Friday, February 14 shortly before 9:00 p.m., Commerce Officers attempted to stop a car for running a stop sign at Pecan and Culver. The driver of the vehicle had just been observed by Commerce Narcotics Investigators in what appeared to be an illegal narcotics transaction. The car immediately accelerated speed and led officers through the A& M Campus before entering Highway 24 and heading south towards I-30. At I-30, the car traveled at speeds higher than 80 miles per hour. The car then led officers back towards Commerce where Texas State Troopers and a DPS helicopter joined the chase. The Texas State Troopers were able to use spikes to deflate the tires as the car continued to flee heading back to Greenville on Highway 224. Once the car entered the city of Greenville, it became disabled because of the deflated tires and it came to a stop in the 4200 Block of Reese St. At points throughout the chase, the driver of the vehicle was seen throwing something out of the window however; officers were unable to recover any suspected narcotics because of the extent of the chase.
Officers conducted a felony stop and were able to take a 44 year old Commerce resident into custody. It is not clear at this point why this man fled from officers as he refused to talk but it is suspected that he had narcotics on him. He was brought back to the Commerce Police Department where he was booked in on charges of Evading Arrest or Detention Using a Motor Vehicle. That charge is a State Jail Felony. The man is being transported to the Hunt County Jail this morning where he will go before a magistrate to be arraigned on the charge.
