Work underway to make Clarksville roads safer for pedestrians

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Clarksville is taking a closer look at its safety measures after four pedestrians have died in recent weeks.

In some instances, there weren't sidewalks or street lights in the area, so the brother of one victim is now pushing for changes.

Michael Leftwich has fond memories of his brother, Will.

"He was so intelligent and loved gaming," Leftwich said.

But his brother never learned to drive, and, on the night of Jan. 19, he was walking to a nearby shopping area when he was struck.

"Three officers came to the door. They asked me to sit down, and they said, 'We regret to inform you that your brother has been killed,'" Leftwich said.

A car hit the 20-year-old from behind on Arrowood Drive and dragged him 100 feet. There were no lights in the area, and Will was wearing dark clothes as he walked in the center lane.

"Between Dec. 14 to Feb. 7, we've had six pedestrian traffic incidents. Four have been fatal," said Clarksville police spokeswoman Officer Natalie Hall.

Even in a fast-growing area like Clarksville, those numbers are getting attention from police, as each of the accidents happened at a different location.

Clarksville police have issued some safety tips for pedestrians. First of all, use the sidewalk if there is one. If not, and you have to walk in the street, walk facing the traffic, making eye contact with the driver.

And, if you are walking at night, never wear dark clothing.

Most importantly, remember pedestrians don't always have the right-of-way.

Last year, the street department spent $3 million improving sidewalks. And there is a new project planned for the spring along Providence and Fort Campbell Boulevard.

"It is designed to provide more pedestrian crossings and pedestrian signals at existing traffic signals," said Chris Cowan, with the Clarksville Street Department.

Leftwich is raising awareness, too. He started a Facebook page in his brother's honor and vows to keep fighting to make the streets of Clarksville a safer place for pedestrians.
