Area TxDOT crews prepare for upcoming winter weather
A TxDOT truck is filled with sand Monday morning
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
The Texas Department of Transportation is gearing up for winter weather that is headed to East Texas.
On Monday, TxDOT announced they will have six to seven trucks filled with a sand and gravel mixture in preparation for the icy conditions expected to hit the area Monday night and Tuesday. We were there Monday morning as those trucks were filled at the TxDOT office in Tyler.
TxDOT's Larry Krantz said some roads in the area will be pre-conditioned before the winter weather is expected to begin. Others in East Texas will be taken care of as needed.
TxDOT will have around a dozen vehicles out and about as the icy conditions sweep through.
Krantz told KLTV that the department is urging residents to use caution while traveling and stay alert to changing road conditions. Although the area has experienced several winter weather events already this season, conditions are different each time.
TxDOT's website offers these winter driving safety tips:
Reduce speed. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions
Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice
Watch carefully for snow removal equipment and stay at least 200 feet back if you are behind a snow plow
Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first
If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you feel you have regained traction then straighten your vehicle
