Overnight refreezing makes icy Friday morning

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The slushy mess left behind by a winter storm this week has frozen overnight to create another morning of icy conditions.

Temperatures fell into the 30's Thursday evening and dropped further into the mid-20's overnight. Everything that was wet Thursday is now ice, including the snow that hadn't melted.

"Everyone should be above freezing by 9 or 10 o'clock this morning," said Tim Miller with the WIS First Alert weather team.

Roads that had not melted clear froze again overnight, making travel even more dangerous for Friday morning.

"We have to watch for melting chunks of ice and icicles falling from roofs and buildings and trees, mainly in areas that have the highest amount of ice accumulations," said Von Gaskin with the WIS News 10 First Alert weather team.

"Anything that melts tonight will refreeze as the overnight low falls to the mid 20s, mainly on roads that have not been cleared," she said.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety echoes that concern, saying secondary roads are still a concern going into Friday.

Luckily, skies are expected to be clear overnight and into Friday, when temperatures will reach the lower 50's and aid in melting the snow and ice accumulations.

A fast-moving front will also bring some late Friday evening intrigue, as it will bring a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

First Alert meteorologist Ben Tanner says the remaining weather patterns will bring a considerable amount of melting that will leave the state in good shape going into the weekend.

One person has died as a result of the storm. In her briefing to the media Wednesday, Gov. Nikki Haley said a woman was killed on Interstate 95 in Clarendon County.

"We have already had two accidents involving officers," she said. "We had a fatality already on 95 and it was from a woman who couldn't slow down fast enough and got involved with an officer."

Sleet and freezing rain started falling at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. WIS News 10 Gaskin says freezing rain fell in Orangeburg, but counties north of Columbia saw snow.

Orangeburg County Fire Services Director Gene Ball reported Wednesday trees were bending and breaking because of the ice, taking down power lines.

Parts of Newberry County, Fairfield County, and Kershaw County received up to 5 inches of snow.

Ghost stories and haunted houses have long been a popular past time, but just how much truth is there to the legends? "As Shakespeare said there are more things in heaven and earth then are in your books,” says Big Foot Expert Jeff Hurley. “There are things we don't understand." At the April 21, Paranormal Conference, experts in the subject came together to further explore their theories.
