Firefighters run 5k to support Joe Yeakley

LINDALE, TX (KLTV) -

Lindale firefighters were joined this morning by officials from all over East Texas as they ran to raise money for injured firefighter Joe Yeakley.

Yeakley was seriously hurt on January 17 when a roof collapsed on him at an early morning house fire. He is still recovering at a Dallas hospital.

The Lindale Volunteer Fire Department says today's fundraiser was much bigger than they expected. A student from Kilgore College and the Kilgore Fire Academy was the first firefighter to cross the finish line.

"It's all about supporting the people who get injured in this job and it's a dangerous job. When one person gets injured we all need to kind of pull together to help them out," Mallory Roe said.

Aaron Munn with Lindale VFD says today's benefit was Yeakley's friend's idea and the community pulled together to make it possible in just a short amount of time.

"Seeing all of the firefighters come from all over Texas just proves that the fire service is a true family," Munn said. "The community has turned out for every event and seeing them come together for Joe gives me a little more encouragement to continue doing what we're doing for him."

More than 400 people participated in today's 5k run, raising around $10,000 for Joe Yeakley and his family.
