One of the top quarterbacks in the state of Texas, All-American Patrick Mahomes is headed to Texas Tech. The Whitehouse star says pro baseball is still a possibility, but his plans are to play two sports in Lubbock.
"I get to play football and baseball, two sports I love," said Mahomes. "I didn't want to give up one yet, so I get to play in college in both sports."
Mahomes will be teaming up with another East Texan. Chapel Hill's Joseph Clark also signed with the Red Raiders. The first game of his senior season, Clark tore his ACL, MCL and PCL. Texas Tech remained loyal.
"The biggest thing for me is the coaches," said Clark. "Obviously they're great men if they stuck with me through this."
The Baylor Bears snagged Mount Pleasant star KD Cannon and Nacogdoches defensive standout Greg Roberts.
Fellow Dragon Jacob Bragg is headed to Kansas. The offensive lineman will join Lufkin's D-J Williams in Lawrence. The duo hope to bring respectability back to the Jayhawks.
"I Hope we both make a name for East Texas and eventually go to the NFL," said Williams.
Two Longview Lobos will now be Big 12 rivals. Travin Howard signed with TCU. He hopes to face off with future Texas Longhorn Dorian Leonard. Leonard is ready to play for new Horns coach Charlie Strong.
"When I talked to Charlie Strong, he's a straight forward guy," said Leonard. "He's not messing around."
Over in Palestine, Oklahoma State is excited to have Jarrell Owens.
The linebacker and defensive end was originally committed to TCU. But Owens says he was born to be a Cowboy.
"I'm from East Texas," said Owens. "I'm country and do country things. Stillwater fits me just right the atmosphere and the community and the coaches and program. Everything just feels right."
