Maury Co. officials searching for Camaro used by police impersonators

COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

Sheriff's officials in Maury County are searching for a bright yellow Camaro occupied by two men pretending to be police officers.

A man from Columbia was on his way home from Lawrence County on Sunday night when he noticed a yellow Camaro following him closely on Highway 43.

When the man crossed into Maury County, the person in the Camaro turned on a blue light.

The driver, believing it was a police officer following him, pulled over.

"I was on the phone with my girlfriend, and I was telling her it was suspicious. They were following real close, and I could barely see the front end of their car," said the driver, Daniel Vansteen.

The imposter cop said Vansteen had a tail light out and told him to step out and check it.

"I was like, 'Are you are cop?' He said yes. I said, 'Where is your badge?' And he said it was in the car," Vansteen said.

When Vansteen stepped out, a second man came up from behind and hit him in the back of head.

The man stole Vansteen's wallet containing $60, and he had to be treated for the blow to the back of the head.

"When it gets out that people are impersonating us, it puts fear in them," said Maury County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ray McCluggage.

Officers say law enforcement doesn't use one light on the dash anymore, and most unmarked law enforcement vehicles are equipped with multiple flashing lights.

They are now concerned about these fake officers.

"It's very dangerous because people all their lives, when they see a blue light, they know they are supposed to pull over, and now they're going to have to question themselves, especially if it's an unmarked vehicle," McCluggage said.

Right now, authorities say the key in tracking down those police impersonators is finding that yellow Camaro. If you spot it, call your local police department.

And authorities say if you're not sure if a real police officer is trying to pull you over, turn on your emergency flashers and drive slowly to the nearest well-lit area.
