Lamondre Markes Tucker has been sentenced to die by lethal injection by a Caddo Parish judge for the murder of his pregnant 18-year-old ex-girlfriend. More >>
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
A Shreveport man already convicted of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend has now been convicted of conspiring to commit jury tampering.
Lamondre Tucker, 23, has been on death row at Angola since his March 2011 conviction on first degree murder in the 2008 shooting death of Tavia Sills.
He was returned to Caddo Parish this week to stand trial on the jury tampering charge.
According to prosecutors, both Lamondre and his mother Alicia Tucker tried to coerce a potential juror in his murder trial into changing her testimony in an attempt to get on the jury. It was a potential a juror that both Lamondre and Alicia Tucker knew through a friend.
On Tuesday, the jury heard a phone call made by Lamondre Tucker to that friend. Tucker could be heard on the call asking if she had the potential juror's phone number. When asked why, he responded, "trying to see what her angle is." Prosecutors argued he wanted her to downplay their relationship so that she would not be dismissed from the jury.
The potential juror reportedly told the judge of the incident. She also took the stand to testify Tuesday before the state rested its case, followed by closing arguments that got under way just before 5 p.m.
The jury deliberated for about an hour and a half before returning the guilty verdict. Lamondre Tucker now faces up to 33 years in jail in addition to his death sentence.
His mother, Alicia Tucker is still awaiting trial on a the same charge. She is accused of being a party to that call to the friend of the potential juror, and of trying to cover it up by telling the friend to delete the potential juror's number from her phone. Her trial date has not yet been set.
