KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV/AP) -

A major snow event ground much of Kansas City to a halt Tuesday.

Road crews fought to plow snow-packed roads. The heavy snowfall made roads treacherous but the number of people who stayed home meant that few major pileups occurred.

Virtually all schools and governments shut down on Tuesday. Most of the major school districts have canceled classes for Wednesday.

When all is said and done, many areas will see almost a foot of snow.

Dire warnings were issued on Monday in an effort to keep businesses closed and folks off the roads to avoid a repeat of the traffic snarls on Feb. 21, 2013, when a snowstorm hit mid-morning after many area residents were already at work.

As of 4 p.m., snow totals ranged from nearly 8 inches in southern portions of the viewing area to 4 inches in Fairway.

Lee's Summit City Public Works crews are working 12-hour-shifts trying to keep at least one passable lane on the road ways. The snow-packed roads are making driving difficult. At the intersection of Third Street and View High Drive, drivers are having a tough time getting traction at the stop light.

It could take crews up to 40 hours to clear roads in Lee's Summit.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a truck carrying ethanol slid off Interstate 29 in St. Joseph about 4 a.m. Tuesday. Both southbound lanes were closed until 6:30 a.m., when one lane was reopened. The driver was not injured.
