Take away his 10 state championships and 15 district crowns. Take away every gold medal in Reverend Jerome Milton's career.
He'd still be considered one of the best coaches in East Texas.
"It goes beyond state championships and district championships and gold medals," said Bishop Gorman athletic director Jeff Smith. "It goes to the molding and shaping of young men and women."
After 25 years as track and field coach at Bishop Gorman High School, Rev. Milton has decided to retire.
"It's going to be very difficult from where I started from," said Milton. "Nurturing and nursing and leading and guiding and with what the Lord has blessed me to bring the program to. It's going to be difficult but at the same time I see a lot of joy."
Clearing hurdles his entire life, Milton has helped young student athletes do the same. In his quarter century of coaching, Milton has helped 105 of his track and field athletes earn college scholarships.
"They'll remember what he said to them to motivate them," said Smith. "They may not remember the race, but they'll remember the man that inspired them to be better than what they thought they could be."
