Pets Fur People says music helps dogs with stress

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A new therapy tool for animals has been donated to the Pets Fur People shelter in Tyler. This year, calming music for pets will be played around the clock to help animals adjust to their temporary shelter home.

The rescued cats seem to be enjoying the classical music made just for pets, but on the other side of the shelter the dogs are taking a bit longer to adjust.

Despite a few still adjusting to the tunes, executive director Gayle Helms says the Rescue Animal mp3 Project is off to a good start.

"I think the music really kind of calms their soul and calms some of the fears they have," Helms said. "You know, for some animals, they've come from a home environment. It's very stressful when they first are surrendered to us."

The music never stops as the animals listen to it through speakers in the kennels and the cattery.

"We got wind that there was a program out there available to shelters and jumped on it really quickly," Helms said. "There actually is a holistic veterinarian in Ohio whose goal is to have this in many, many shelters."

Andrea Hammersley, a pet owner, says although they just installed the speakers last week, she can already see a difference in the way the dogs are acting.

"They've been a lot calmer. Normally they're real rambunctious," Hammersley said. "I would recommend it. I mean it's worked up here and, I mean, the dogs are used to it. I wasn't expecting it to work as well as it has."

Helms is hopeful the music will even help with adoption numbers.
