Winter weather and flu virus cause blood supply shortage

Posted: Updated:

Carter Blood Care says for the first time in many years they are experiencing a critical blood supply shortage. Donor centers have had difficulty this month finding donors due to illness and the cold weather.

"Our donors aren't here but the need for blood is. During the winter months, we see a shortage in supply but this year is critical," Bob Mauldin, Carter Blood Care manager of regional relations, said. "All blood types are currently needed for East Texas patients at local hospitals."

Mauldin says they have empty shelves in Tyler and the flu virus may be the reason why.

"There are a variety of illnesses going around so anyone who is feeling bad or thinks they might be sick probably ought not to donate," Mauldin said. "So, that's another reason we see a drop in blood donations this time of year. If you feel good, we encourage you to come in and attempt to donate."

A short medical screening is provided to check a donor's current health status. Health officials say donors who have recently received the flu shot are able to give blood.
