CORNVILLE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Cornville man said $1,260 worth of rare coins were stolen from his residential mailbox over the weekend.

He said he bought 40 Morgan silver dollars from a Phoenix-area coin dealer and was under the impression they would be delivered via FedEx or UPS, according to a Yavapai County Sheriff's news release.

Instead, the man confirmed the package was mailed on Jan. 3 and delivered to his residential mailbox by a U.S. Postal Service carrier the next day.

The man said that upon learning they had been mailed, he had hoped they were being delivered to his post office box in Cornville instead of his rarely used residential mailbox, according to the release.

The package was never found.

A signature confirming delivery of the coins was not required.

Deputies notified the US Postal Inspectors Office regarding the theft and they are assisting in the investigation, according to the release..

Anyone with information about the coins or suspect(s) are asked to call the sheriff's office at 928-771-3260 or Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232 to remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash
