Scottsdale considering 'pedal bus' ordinance

Posted: Updated:

We first told you about pedal buses or tandem taverns two years ago but now their future could be in jeopardy if a currently-proposed ordinance is passed.

Tour de Tavern was one of the first pedal buses to come to the state. They are now in their third year and even built a second tandem bike to keep up with demand.

"We do bachelor parties, birthday parties, we've done a lot of Christmas parties and holiday parties," Brendan Holve, co-owner of the Tour de Tavern, said.

The motor-less Tour de Tavern cruises from bar to restaurant going about 5 to 8 miles an hour without any party-goers having to get behind the wheel.

So far, they've been operating under the good grace of the city, but as the trend grows, they're eager for some ground rules.

"It gives us some validity and establishes as part of all the other regular businesses in town," Holve said.

Tour de Tavern already has some safety features like lights, a horn, and optional helmets. They stay on side streets and don't allow alcohol on board.

But a proposed ordinance would dictate what kind of lights they could have, how big the pedal bus could be, and limit their hours of operation from 6 in the morning to 10 at night.

Holve said aside from making them put on the brakes at 10, they support the measure, especially as this mode of transportation takes off.

"We started with one bike now we have two, so I think if we can keep adding a bike or two we'll be in a good spot," Holve said.

This issue is going to come before the city council in either February or March.
