Motion to eliminate private club status in order to serve mixed drinks moves forward in Kilgore

Posted: Updated:
KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Organizers of a petition to eliminate private club status in Kilgore say they have now met their goal. Jackie Clayton, owner of the Back Porch restaurant and organizer of the Kilgore Restaurant Group said the petition currently has about 800 signatures.

Signatures equivalent to 35 percent of the number of voters in Kilgore in the last gubernatorial election were needed. That equals about 735 signatures. Clayton said they are aiming to get 1,100 signatures by January 10. The item is qualified to appear on the May 2014 ballot.

Currently, Kilgore establishments must have "private club" status in order to sale mixed drinks.

The Kilgore Restaurant Group hired an outside firm to help them with the petition. The Back Porch, Chili's, Jack Ryan's and Jalapeno Tree are all current members of the group.
