Family of WWII soldier presented with his lost Purple Heart

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – On Wednesday morning, a lost Purple Heart medal found during a home renovation in Conway was returned to the family of the WWII soldier who awarded it.

The family of Technical Sergeant Odell Holden was presented with the medal during a ceremony at the Sand Dunes Resort, held by the non-profit foundation Purple Hearts Reunited.

TSGT Holden, born September 27 1920 in Horry County, enlisted as an infantryman in the U.S. Army on October 2, 1944, according to information provided by Purple Hearts Reunited. He entered Lesneven, France on August 18, 1944, and ten days later, he paid the ultimate sacrifice.

TSGT Holden was buried in the Sandy Plain Cemetery in Galivants Ferry, SC, and for his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.

TSGT Holden's Purple Heart was discovered in early December while a man was remodeling an old home in Conway, near Route 501. He found the medal in its original case and turned it over to Chapter 0354 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, who also was part of the ceremony Thursday.

TSGT Holden's Purple Heart was presented to the children of his sister Evelyn, niece Lois Weatherford and Nephew Buddy Richardson of Myrtle Beach, SC.
