Corizon: AZ inmates potentially received contaminated injections

BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Arizona Department of Corrections is looking for changes to be made after two dozen inmates in Arizona were potentially exposed to contaminated injections.

The DOC confirmed Thursday that 10 of the 24 people potential exposed by the contaminated injections were also exposed in 2012.

The department said an incident of similar nature in August 2012 involved a different nurse. None of the 112 inmates potentially exposed at that time, including ten people who were again exposed, tested positive for blood-borne pathogens, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

On Jan. 5, there was a violation of medication protocol at three of the seven units of the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye, according to the correction healthcare provider Corizon. The three prison units were Morey, Rast and Eagle Point.

On Wednesday, Corizon spokeswoman Susan Morgenstern said the staff notified the inmates and gave them medications as a precautionary measure.

"Every indication is that the incident is the result of the failure by one individual nurse to follow specific, standard and well-established nursing protocols when dispensing injected insulin to 24 inmates," Corrections Director Charles Ryan said in a statement Thursday. "Corizon suspended that nurse, and her access to any Department of Corrections facility was immediately revoked.

Ryan released the following statement on Wednesday:

"The Arizona Department of Corrections expects its health care provider, Corizon, to aggressively address any errors that are made in patient care.

"Corizon responded to this incident immediately and has assured the department that it will conduct a full investigation of this matter to ensure any potentially affected inmates are treated. Additionally, the department has requested that Corizon review and adjust clinical procedures in response to this matter."
