Jenna Bush Hager honors 12 women who make Longview shine

Posted: Updated:

There were stars over Longview during the middle of the day Tuesday.

They were shining during the fourteenth annual Stars Over Longview Awards Ceremony at Maude Cobb Convention Center today.

These stars are actually women who are chosen for their leadership in and dedication to the community, and they are then featured in a calendar.

Mary Ramos is Ms. August in the new calendar. She owns East to West Tourism which produces three tourism publications, and she says she was floored when she found out she had been chosen as one of the Stars Over Longview.

"I was pretty surprised when I got the phone call that I had been chosen. I was very humbled because I'm in a group with a bunch of women that are movers and shakers in this community, so to be in with that group, I'm very excited," Mary said.

She went on to say many involved with the community may not have met each other, were it not for the Stars.

"A couple of them I knew, but for the most part they were strangers to me except for me seeing all the things that they had done too. So we've seen each other involved in the community, but we've never really been involved in each other," Mary revealed.

This year's guest speaker was Jenna Bush Hager. You may know her as a former First Daughter, the child of former President George and Laura Bush.

"I'm thrilled to be here in Longview. I'm a little shocked at the weather. I'm sure you all are, too, but I love any excuse to come back to Texas. I was in Dallas yesterday, so to be back in Texas, which is where I was born and raised, feels really great, and I know people here really love my parents, who of course I love," Jenna said.

She brought a lot of love to Longview.

"I love being here in Longview and I love being here for an organization that applauds women in Longview that are making a difference. Because women have to balance so much, any woman that balances career and being a wife and a mother and also helps her community is a woman I want to meet and applaud, so I'm thrilled to be able to do that today," Jenna stated.

Jenna is not the only one expressing her feelings about East Texas and the women who call it home.

"This is my home, I love Longview. I love it," Mary added.

And it seems Longview loves Mary, and the other eleven Stars shining over Longview.

Congratulations to the Stars Over Longview. Their work has not gone unnoticed.
