PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix firefighters took extra measures to save a family's pets after pulling them from a burning condominium on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 5.

Four dogs and two cats were found in the burning condo near 12th Street and Maryland Avenue about 5:30 p.m., said Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra.

The homeowners weren't home, and firefighters got the pets out safely and immediately started resuscitation efforts using Fido bags designed specifically for pets, Saavedra said.

The actions of the Phoenix Firefighters in saving all six animals from the burning condominium has earned them the PETA Compassionate Fire Department Award.

"Phoenix's firefighters are truly heroes because they don't consider their job done until all residents, both human and non-human, have made it to safety" said PETA's Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch.

PETA will be honoring the Phoenix Fire Department with a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation and a box of vegan chocolates.
