Over 150 animals dropped off at the Humane Society of NE Texas since Christmas

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Longview’s Humane Society of East Texas is usually close to capacity nearly all the time.

But, since Christmas they have had many more drop-offs than usual.  Many of the 158 animals dropped off this month were meant as Christmas presents.

Kharha Hetrick is the relocation coordinator at the Humane Society of Northeast Texas in Longview, and she has a lot of puppies this time of year for a different, yet similar reason: Christmas.

“The day after Christmas their dog got into it with the puppy and instead of trying to work with it they just brought it here and we ended up having to take it to the vet and take care of its injuries because they didn’t even want to do that, said Hetrick. "We’ve had other cases where a lady got a gift from her grandchildren and she freaked out, called us said absolutely not and they ended up having to bring it up here,”

Some of the dogs were bred to be Christmas gifts, but Santa didn’t make the pickup.

“We end up with like ten puppies from their litter, and they’re just like I just don’t know why I couldn’t get rid of these Lab-Husky-Doberman mix puppies for fifty dollars before Christmas,” Hetrick revealed.

“You’re talking about a living creature that’s going to be with you for 15-20 years depending on the breed. It’s something you’re going to have to take responsibility for, walk, take to training classes," added Hetrick. "If you just get it spur of the moment or just get it for somebody who isn’t even thinking about a puppy or prepared for it, then you’re really setting yourself up for some sort of disastrous situation with the puppy."

Even though many of the puppies were taken by animal rescues, some just wait to be adopted. If they wait too long they could get sick due to exposure to other animals, or they may have to be euthanized.

Hetrick's advice is to never give an animal as a surprise gift. If you do you’re gambling with its life.
