PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is helping a member of its posse who was critically wounded running to the aid of a Phoenix cop.

The Sheriff's Office Memorial Fund plans to present $15,000 to the family of 63-year-old Phillip Grigg on Wednesday afternoon, according to Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Grigg and a Phoenix officer were both shot by an armed robbery suspect in northeast Phoenix on New Year's Eve.

As the suspects were trying to flee police, they slammed into Grigg's vehicle and then one of the suspects attacked the Phoenix officer. Grigg saw the attack and both men were trying to detain the suspect when they were shot.

Both Grigg, and Phoenix police Officer Scott Sefranka suffered life-threatening injuries. Both are making steady progress, MCSO said.

Sefranka was moved out of intensive care on Wednesday and is reported in stable condition.

Grigg has been a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office posse volunteer for the last three years and was a seven-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, Arpaio said.

His wife of 25 years, Elizabeth Grigg, spoke at a news conference held by MCSO on Saturday.

"Grigg, a 63-year-old father of two and grandfather of three, has been in and out of surgery since being shot in his chest at close range and has undergone multiple surgeries in an effort to save his life," Arpaio said.
