PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The man charged with kidnapping an 8-year-old Mesa girl pleaded not guilty at a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Robert Milliron, 22, entered his plea in Maricopa County Superior Court. His next scheduled court date is Feb. 26.

Investigators said Milliron snatched the girl off her bike on Dec. 22 in front of the apartment complex where she lived.

He admitted to the kidnapping and said he took the child because he was lonely and wanted a companion, a Mesa police spokesman said.

The girl was able to escape after Milliron crashed his getaway car into a wall in a nearby alley, the spokesman said.

Milliron lived in the same apartment complex as the girl, but the two didn't know each other, the spokesman said.

He was booked into jail on charges of felony kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, aggravated assault and hit-and-run.
