Ringing in the New Year with Smith County's first 2014 baby

Posted: Updated:

What better way to ring in the New Year than with a new baby?

Well, that's exactly what Chantel and Ruben Galaz did.

The Lindale couple welcomed little Gavin Reed Galaz to the world at 6:33 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He weighs eight pounds and is 21 inches long.

Gavin was the first baby born in Tyler in 2014. He took his first breaths at East Texas Medical Center. They didn't plan on having the baby on the first.

"He wasn't due for another few days and we came to our doctor's appointment yesterday and expected to come home. We didn't have our hospital bag or anything, so we had to improvise," said mother Chantel.

Chantel and Ruben say they plan to add another baby to their family, but not for a couple years.
