Jordan Wood can't wait to begin the new year on a high note!
"This is phenomenal. I can't imagine being anywhere else right now," Wood said.
Wood is the drum major for the Straughn High School band in Covington County. Wood will lead the group out on the Superdome field at halftime during the Sugar Bowl between Alabama and Oklahoma. Straughn's band will perform with 15 other high school bands from across the country.
Band director Will Parker says the school received the invitation more than a year ago and has been looking forward to it ever since. Parker admitted to being a bit nervous knowing his students will be on the big stage in the Big Easy. In fact, the school has never experienced anything like this before.
"My role is to get them prepared, but once they're on the field, I'll step out of the way," Parker said.
Over the course of one year band members sacrificed a lot of Saturdays to make the trip. It cost each student $1,100 to travel to New Orleans.
"We spent Saturday after Saturday and so many fundraisers making this possible," Wood said.
Only 47 members of the entire band of 75 could make it.
