A local Army nurse has a tough task ahead of her: bringing home a bomb-sniffing dog from Afghanistan.

Captain Sarah Matuszek has been an RN in the United States Army Reserves for eight years. She has spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although Matuszek is used to seeing humans on a daily basis, she had a different kind of patient a few months ago.

"Jet was brought into our medical treatment tent one evening, and his handler had carried him in," she said. "He didn't know what was wrong with him and we were the only medical team there. We didn't have any kind of veterinarian; we were human providers."

With help from a vet on the phone from a base an hour away, they were able to stabilize Jet before transport. In the few short hours of care and later check-up visits, Matuszek fell in love.

"He kind of just melted my heart, and I stood by his side," she said. "I pet him, I'd comfort him. I just couldn't let him go."

Jet is an 8-year-old bomb-sniffing dog. He, too, has spent numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. At his age and with his medical scare, it's time for Jet to retire. Matuszek is working with the Puppy Rescue Mission to raise money to have Jet shipped to the United States.

"The Puppy Rescue Mission – they raised their portion of the money and now it's basically up to me to raise the rest, which is only $1,100," she said.

Matuszek already has two dogs of her own. As much as she would love to bring Jet to her home, she has something in mind that she says will make the task of getting him here all worth it.

"Maybe eventually hook him up with a vet who needs a service dog," she said. "I want to find him a purpose, and I think maybe a disabled veteran might be the right way to go…He's a great dog. All he wants in life is a belly rub – belly rub and that's it, and I just hope to bring him home to the U.S. and get him a fireplace to lay by. He's done his job."
