Customers can still find cab rides, just not for free

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A free cab service is no longer available. With the Liberty Bowl game taking place Tuesday, cab companies are working almost around the clock.

Yellow Cab is the largest taxi service in Memphis

"It's still one of the busiest days of the year for us," said Ham Smythe, president of Yellow and Checker cab services.

He says this year's care cab program ran from Christmas Eve to December 3 but that the Florida-based program did not have enough money to run through New Year's Eve.

"I guess they just maxed out what they were willing to contribute to the program," said Smythe.

Smythe says there will still be plenty of cabs operating Tuesday night; customers will just have to pay for a ride.

To make hailing a cab easier, his company is using a new app.

"We have a new app that they can download. Just go to their Google or app store and download 'Yellow Cab Memphis.' It's a free app and it allows them to go right into our dispatch system without them having to call," said Smythe.

Listed below you can find some contact numbers for area taxis. If you don't have a designated driver this New Year's and need a ride, call a cab.
