7 from 7: Stories for your New Year's Eve

Good afternoon, and happy last day of 2013 to you all!

Here are some selected stories for you to peruse this afternoon:

1. As the flu continues to spread across Texas, East Texas Medical Center in Tyler has confirmed a case of H1N1, more commonly known as swine flu. The case was discovered on December 22. Two Gregg County residents died from the H1N1 virus in December. Other types of flu cases outnumber H1N1, with a reported 59 cases reported the week of Dec. 22.

2. Target is getting hit with another lump of coal this holiday season.

The nation's second-largest discount retailer said Tuesday that an unidentified number of gift cards sold over the holidays were not properly activated. The Minneapolis chain says the number of cards affected was less than 0.1 percent of the total sold and that it will honor the affected cards. Holders of Target gift cards can check the balance by following instructions on the back of the card. Customers can bring faulty cards to any Target service desk or call 800-544-2943 for help.

3. Many of you lost loved ones over the past 12 months, and you have shared their stories with us this week. Not just the stories of their deaths, but the stories of who they were to you. See our tribute page to those East Texans here.

4. We also have put together for you a list of the stories that made the biggest impact on East Texans in 2013; from East Texans responding to the West Fertilizer explosion to a Chinese rocket disintegrating over East Texas to a tragic stabbing in a Longview hospital, we have a list for you to check out to wrap up those stories as we close out 2013.

5. With fireworks, dancing and late-night revelry, millions around the world have already welcomed 2014 on Tuesday, gathering for huge displays of jubilation and unity as the new year arrived. Check out the details and scroll through our slideshow of New Year's Eve celebrations around the world.

6. Your year in viral videos: From the sweet to the funny to the completely ridiculous, we have a round-up of 2013's biggest videos for you right here.

7. Texas State Parks want you to take a hike, but they're not telling you to get lost. In fact, they want you to find yourself at Tyler State Park at 10am on New Year's day. What a great way to start the year!

We visited the park and found out it not just Tyler State Park that's hosting the hike.

Before I close, let me just say this: there will be families on the roads in East Texas tonight. My kids will be out there, as will many of yours. Please, remember that and DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. Call someone for help, call a taxi, have a designated driver; whatever it takes.

We do not want to have to report on any accidents in East Texas tomorrow morning, so y'all have fun and be safe while you're doing it! Happy New Year!
