(RNN) - Mississippi State returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 2 when it takes on Maryland Eastern Shore (2-8) at Humphrey Coliseum. The Bulldogs are coming off a decisive 82-66 loss to UNLV back on Dec. 22.

State will be down to eight scholarship players when they tip off Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.

Guard Dre Applewhite, a 6-5 guard from Memphis who drew six starts and averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds his season, has left the team and will transfer to another school, MSU coach Rick Ray announced.

Craig Sword continues to provide the team's offensive punch with 15.3 points per game. Gavin Ware is averaging 10.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

UMES has lost six straight games, most recently shooting 31 percent from the floor in a 71-58 home loss to American on Dec. 29.

KyRee Jones is the Hawks' leading scorer, averaging 16.4 points per game. Hakeem Baxter averages 14.4 ppg.
