Dispatch tapes released in KCPD officer's fatal run-in with firefighter

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It has been more than three weeks since a fight downtown left a Kansas City firefighter dead and a police officer badly beaten.

The fire dispatch tapes have been released, and they give a new look into how the investigation unfolded.

Investigators say that during a dispute over cab fare, firefighter Anthony Bruno attacked officer Donald Hubbard.

In fire dispatch recordings obtained by KCTV5, a medic describes what happened.

"Getting punched multiple times in the face. He said he nearly lost consciousness. He has a large laceration. He said he was seeing stars. He was nearly unconscious but didn't go completely out," the recording states.

The recordings also reveal some confusion at the scene. At first, dispatchers believe the officer was shot instead of the firefighter.

"They're down at 1224 Baltimore. They've had an officer shot down there, and they're asking you to come down," the recording states.

At some point the fire dispatcher asks the Kansas City Police Department why there is so much attention on this particular shooting.

"Hey, while I got you on the phone, can you give me any idea why I'm waking up deputy chiefs and all this on this shooting?" the dispatcher asks.

"It's gonna be an officer involved, yeah but the other party involved is another 1081 employee, so," the KCPD officer responded.

"Okay, so is that with the fire department?" the dispatcher asks.

"Yes," the officer responds.

Hubbard will need reconstructive surgery to repair extensive damage to his face. He is currently recovering at home on paid injury leave.
