MOSS BLUFF, LA (KPLC) -

It sits vacant now, but plans are in the works to build a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market store in Moss Bluff.

"Ward One has been tax based challenge, so anytime we can bring additional businesses to the area then it contributes more to the tax base," said Calcasieu Parish Police Jury President, Shannon Spell.

The plans are for this Wal-Mart to be 20% of the size of a Wal-Mart Superstore and sell only groceries.

But Calcasieu parish Police Jury officials, who recently approved to rezone the area to allow the large food store, said it's an advantage even at a smaller size.

"As we bring new businesses in that can contribute to that tax base, the funding will increase without us actually raising the taxes for those services," said Spell.

But it's the location of the grocery store that could challenge another.

The proposed lot is across the street from Market Basket on the east side of Parish Road.

And that's competition Police Jury officials said in theory, could lower prices for consumers.

And while the Hwy 171 Wal-Mart is close by, some Moss Bluff residents said they welcome the new store even closer to home

"It would be closer to my house, because I live on the outskirts of town so it would be closer and easier for me," said Ashley Shirley.

And a Wal-Mart technically in Moss Bluff, means a direct benefit for Moss Bluff.

"It's going to be a great thing for the community and we wish all businesses in Ward One success," said Spell.

With the property now rezoned for business, work is underway to seal the deal with Wal-Mart's signature.

The Police Jury also imposed an additional condition requiring the new store to incorporate landscape to the parking lot area.
