Christmas concert at Cathedral enters its 21st year

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A Lake Area tradition held its final rehearsal before show time. The choir at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is set to perform its 21st Christmas Concert before Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Accompanied by an orchestra, the choir will perform some favorites like "Oh Holy Night" and "Silent Night."  We're told this year they will also perform some more contemporary pieces.

Music Director Bob Marcantel said it's a lot of work, but the feedback makes it all worth it.

"I think the most rewarding part is having the feedback we get after mass when people say things like -- it's just not Christmas until I've been to the concert and the mass at the Cathedral... Or that music really lifted me up and I was dealing with holiday depression and the music lifted me up," said Marcantel.

Marcantel said he started the concert 21 years ago during his first year at the church.

"At that time they didn't really have a full concert... it was only about 15 minutes. So we decided to make it something special and people have really come to enjoy and look forward to it each year," said Marcantel.

The concert begins at 11 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Tuesday, December 24th. It's free to the public and everyone is invited to stick around for Midnight Mass.
