Sahuarita neighborhood in shock after 3-year-old kills himself

SAHUARITA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Sahuarita Police are investigating a tragic shooting involving a toddler killing himself. The shooting happened in the 300 block of Calle Minerva just before 8 p.m. Friday night.

Relatives came home briefly Saturday night and loaded bags into the back of an S.U.V. None of them wanted to talk on camera as they were too upset about the tragedy.

Investigators say the three year old somehow got a hold of the gun and shot himself in the face.

"[The gun] ended up falling out of a pocket or waistband and it was not known it was out of place," Philip Steele, Sahuarita Police spokesman, said. "The child found the gun unfortunately."

The toddler died at the scene. Neighbors saw the commotion.

"I saw the street filled with law enforcement, fire trucks, ambulances," Josue Gradilles, neighbor, said. "The only thing I really heard was a woman crying and distraught saying 'I'm sorry, I'm really sorry.'"

Gradilles lives down the street from the family. He also has a toddler. He was stunned to hear the news and feels bad for the family.

"I can't even imagine what they're going through. Accidents happen and you think this will never happen to us," said Gradilles.

Sahuarita Police are still investigating but have not charged the parents with any crime. They're treating it as an accident but say the tragedy should be a reminder to all parents about gun safety.

"Just make sure it's locked up especially if you have children in the house," said Steele.
