TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
Three generations of an East Texas family were reunited Thursday when Petty Officer Erin Durham returned home after being away from home for more than a year.
Her grandmother and mother, along with a big group of East Texans, were waiting for her at Tyler Pounds Regional Airport as she walked off the plane. Flags, clappers and signs lined the airport lobby to welcome the servicewoman home.
Durham was born in Tyler and raised in Lindale and attended Tyler Junior College until she realized she wanted to join the United States Navy. She dropped out of school and has spent the last three years serving in the U.S. Navy.
She tells us it was her small town, East Texas background that helped her realize her dream, saying, “I just wanted to get out of a tiny town and be somebody and this was the path that took me there. I've been so many places—Thailand, South Korea, Italy. I got to see the coliseum. It's pretty cool. I've done more than I ever imagined I could.”
Durham will spend just ten days home in East Texas, but is overjoyed to be home for the holidays.
She will soon return to California, where she is currently stationed.
