'Respect the K' becomes hip hop motivation

KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

'Respect the K.' A simple phrase, turned hip hop battle cry.

"It's crazy," said Kilgore senior Jake Brantley.  "We posted in on Twitter. All the sudden it's a song."

Cody Murphy hasn't suited up for the Kilgore Bulldogs since 2008. The former wide receiver is doing all he can to motivate the 2013 Bulldogs to a state championship.

"I was intending to motivate the Bulldogs," said Murphy.  "Just keep them going."

Writing the a song in just over 15 minutes, Murphy and the team from HustleTyme Media Group turned 'Respect the K' into a motivational hit.

"I didn't expect it to be a song," said Kilgore senior Aaron Foy.  "He (Cody) came up to me and said 'I have a song for you.'  And I said 'Let me hear it.' It just blew up."

"We uploaded it and in about probably 3 to 4 hours it was going," said Murphy.  "It hasn't stopped yet. The numbers keep rolling."

So do the wins.  With a 14 and 0 record and trip to AT&T Stadium in site, Murphy hopes to add a championship version after a win on Friday.

"It means so much," said Murphy. "'Respect the K' can go in so many different ways. We demand our respect. If we don't get it, we take it."

"It definitely gets us fired up," said Foy of the song.  "Ready to go. Turn that song on and live off the hype."

Murphy feels like he's playing on Friday.

"It's a big game for me," said Murphy.  "It's a big game for them. We're going to show the Cowboys what they should have done in there."

Jackson is back for Lufkin.Jackson is back for Lufkin.

Like Longview, Lufkin is always talented. Before the Panthers begin District 12-6A action, they'll play a loaded East Texas schedule featuring the Lobos in week 1, followed by Nacogdoches and John Tyler. Normally a 7 and 4 campaign would be considered a success, but not in Panther nation. In fact, despite making the playoffs every year, Lufkin hasn't advanced past the first round since 2012.

Our Red Zone Rundown continues with the other two Class 6A programs in East Texas. In District 11-6A with John Tyler and Tyler Lee, who we featured Monday night, Longview figures to challenge for the league title in 2017. In fact, the Lobos and Lions shared the district championship a year ago. It's no secret, Longview is used to winning and it does so by running the football and playing sound defense.
