EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

A Dallas man is walking across the country to raise money for wounded servicemen and women and he's making his way through East Texas on Tuesday.

Austin Shirley, a Navy veteran and Dallas native, started walking from Florida on October 9 with his Siberian Husky, Archer. On Tuesday, he was walking along Highway 80 approaching Hallsville when we caught up with him.

He's trying to raise $50,000 for Wounded Wear, an organization that provides modified clothing that fits around the prosthetics some wounded veterans use.

Shirley, who has already worn through three pairs of shoes, says he and his dog - who is on his second set of shoes - have been sleeping under the stars in tents and hammocks, choosing not to spend any money on shelter. He added that anyone is allowed to hike with them.

"Our team is highly motivated and we don't plan on letting any weather or terrain stop us from completing our journey," said Shirley.

The man and his dog plan on averaging 16 miles a day by the time the trip is complete. Shirley hopes to be in Dallas by Christmas to spend some time with his family.

"I keep the shoes on the dog because we do so much walking on the road that I just have to protect his paws," Austin explained.

Shirley has raised a little over $7,200 of his $50,000 goal.
