Gladstone man may have to give up pet lynx

GLADSTONE, OR (KPTV) -

A Gladstone man may soon be forced to get rid of his family pet.

The city and state say his 35-pound lynx can't stay. Sosha, the 16-year-old lynx, has lived in Clackamas County her entire life.

Her owner said she doesn't leave her cage, no one can get in and she's never hurt anyone.

But the city and state say that doesn't matter, even though Patrick Clark has had her since she was just 10 days old.

"Sosha is my baby, my cat, my animal soul mate you can say," he said.

She's also illegal. When Clark moved to Gladstone last year, a neighbor complained about his pet. Soon after, he learned she was against a city ordinance and a state law.

Because of that, 24 days from now, Sosha's cage could be empty.

"Is it impossible for her to exist somewhere else? I'm not going to say that, but most likely I was told she would pass away," Clark said.

Clark has since been fighting to keep his cat.

"She takes care of me and I take care of her," he said. "She's family."

He said, in 2009, the state gave out permits to longtime owners of exotic animals. He wasn't aware of the change in law and didn't apply.

Now, he hopes to get grand fathered in before Sosha has to go.

"I try not to think about it," he said. "It's very, very, very hard to imagine."

He said Sosha is getting older. She only has a few years left. Clark wants her to spend that time with him.

"She opened her eyes with me, and I want her to close her eyes with me, but not this way," he said.

Clark is a veteran and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Because of that, he's tried to get Sosha qualified as a companionship animal but was told that wouldn't work.

He's also tried to find her a spot in a sanctuary. That hasn't worked either.
