NEW ORLEANS, LA (KSLA) -

The Byrd Yellow Jackets left the Superdome Thursday night without a trophy in their quest for the state championship, but still with a bus load of pride.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock at the D-I State Championship game, Byrd quarterback Tyler Howard fell to the ground along side his offensive line. Their helmets were off, their faces in their hands, hiding the tears while reality set in. They had come so close.

Byrd fell to defending state champions Archbishop Rummel in the D-I title game, 23-22. The Yellow Jackets led until late in the fourth quarter when the Raiders scored a controversial touchdown. It looked as if Rummel's receiver had lost the ball before reaching the endzone, but the play stood, giving the Raiders the go ahead touchdown which would be the final score of the game.

Led by Dominic Haggerty, Byrd scored on their opening drive just three plays into the game on a 53-yard touchdown run by the running back. They led 19-10 at the half only to be limited on scoring opportunities in the second half. Byrd was held to just one field goal.

"I'd say the missed extra points really hurt us as well as the turnovers," said Mike Suggs, Byrd head coach. "You can't turn the ball over like that in big games."

Haggerty was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship game. "All the long hours and early morning practices in the summer were worth it," said Haggerty. "We will be back."

This was Byrd's first trip to the Superdome and their first state title appearance in 50 years.
