An unusual holiday event was held in Longview over the weekend, combining holiday spirit with roller derby. Ladies of the Backwoods Bombshells Roller Derby held what they hope will become a holiday tradition.
"This is a benefit for the Longview Police Department's Blue Santa toy program. We're giving 100 percent today of our ticket and concession profits to Blue Santa," says Backwoods Bombshells Roller Derby member Delta Burns, who organized the event.
The Bombshells are a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
A good crowd came to the Longview Expo Center, for a sport that is catching on with both women and men.
"I just really enjoyed it, the action was great. Its a whole lot better and a different atmosphere, being out here to watch it and listening to the girls and when they have their big crashes," says fan Greg Wexler.
48-year-old skater Denise Jefferson had never played an organized sport.
"I wanted to play , and I love it I just love it. It makes me feel good. It makes us as a team feel good and we take great pride in helping the community," she says.
The ladies will be holding another charity roller derby in the spring to benefit Upshur County's no-kill animal shelter.
