A transient from western Arkansas is in jail after police say he swung a hatchet at shoppers inside a Marshall Walmart on Sunday morning.

Police say just before 6 a.m. on Sunday, dispatchers in Marshall received a report that a man, later identified as 27-year-old Christopher Hamilton, of Crawford, AR, was inside Walmart on E. End Boulevard North attacking customers with a hatchet.

When law enforcement arrived, they found several people with injuries from the attack.

Hamilton fled the scene into a wooded area and near the store where he was located at 7:30 a.m. by authorities. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony. On Monday, Hamilton's bond was set at $225,000 - $75,000 for each charge.

According to Walmart Corporate Media Relations representative Betsy Hardin, three people were injured in the attack. A female associate is still in the hospital, but is expected to be released Monday. A second associate and a customer who attempted to intervene were also injured, although neither were hospitalized

Hardin says everyone is in good spirits after the attack and are thankful the situation wasn't worse.
