TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Hundreds of East Texans are greeting United States Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Louie Gohmert in Tyler at the Champion of Freedom Awards Dinner is hosted by Grassroots America, We The People. They will be honoring the congressmen as well as four young local patriots.

The winter weather took a toll on events to Tyler's north and west. Ted Cruz's noon meeting with Fort Worth leaders was canceled, but all day in Tyler, the Harvey Convention Center was buzzing with last minute preparations for one of Grassroots America's largest events.

"It was so important for us to recognize Representative Gohmert and Senator Cruz. We're huge supporters of both of them and appreciate them for having the courage to stand up for what is right... even when they're standing alone sometimes," says JoAnn Fleming, the director of Grassroots America.

With poinsettias in place and more than 100 feet of tables set up for the buffet line, some decorative lighting adjustments and audio tests were all that was left. Coat racks in the hallways were ready and waiting for the 600 people expected to attend the event.

"Grassroots America has grown from a local organization to one that now has statewide influence and we're very proud of that," explains Fleming.

Both Senator Cruz and Representative Gohmert will receive awards from Grassroots America and speak to the crowd. Then, four high school and college students will take the stage.

"We are actually mentoring... providing some scholarships to some programs for our young patriots in the community," says Fleming.

The event sold out quickly. However, the people who bought tickets and canceled due to the weather opted to donate their tickets to World War II veterans who hadn't gotten a seat.
