As cold air settles in, East Texas braces for wintery blast

The front is through and the cold air is settling in. Daytime highs for Thursday have already occurred, mainly just after midnight. Since then temperatures have been dropping and will continue to drop throughout the day. Around 4 p.m., temperatures will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

Overnight temperatures will be getting cold, with average temperatures around 33. Some areas will be below freezing tonight, and with that we are expecting some areas to get some freezing rain and sleet. The better chances for sleet come in our northwestern counties and the better chances for freezing rain come in our northeastern counties. Deep East Texas should just see rain.

Because of this blast of winter weather, an Ice Storm Warning will be in effect for Smith, Wood, Upshur, Franklin, Camp, Titus, Morris and Cass Counties from 4 a.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Friday. We also have a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday for Kaufman, Van Zandt, Hunt, Rains, Hopkins and Delta Counties. There is also a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 a.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Friday.

Your Friday features mostly cloudy skies and the chance for some more wintry mix, but again Deep East Texas will see mainly rain. The best chance to see the slick roads and the freezing rain will be north of interstate 20. Highs on Friday will top out on average in the middle 30s.
