7 from 7: Stories for your Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

Good afternoon! We're halfway through the week, holding strong ... and bracing for the coming cold weather.

Here are some stories for you to check out this afternoon:

1. The train crash that killed four people on Dec. 1 in New York was shocking, as people learned that the train was lumbering into a curve at 82 mph, almost double the speed the train should have been traveling. New details today: the NTSB says the train was working just fine, but the train's driver nodded off.

2. Andre Thompson began ringing a Salvation Army bell in front of Walgreens on Rieck Road in Tyler Tuesday at 11 a.m., and he is still going! Thompson's effort is part of a national contest to see who can break the world record for the longest time spent consecutively ringing the bell beside the famous red kettle.  KLTV's Summer Dashe will be live from Andre's kettle on East Texas News at 6!

3. Holiday spirit lagging? Let some classic Christmas movies help. Liberty Theater in Tyler is showing some old classics this month, like White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life, as well as modern classics like Will Ferrell's Elf. Click here to see the details.

4. "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker was killed by impact and fire in a crash that occurred while he was a passenger in a Porsche driven by his friend, according to an autopsy released Wednesday.

5. During a season in which the phrase "hustle and bustle" is perfectly descriptive and people are battling over the last game system/device/toy in the store, it is nice to stop the busy-ness for a few minutes and reflect on the true beauty of the Christmas season. Check out this link to a video of a flash mob performing the Hallelujah Chorus in a mall's food court. It will brighten  your day and put you in the Christmas spirit, we guarantee it.

6. Dispatchers during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting stayed calm as they spoke with people inside the building.

"Somebody's got a gun," a female caller told 911. "I saw a glimpse of somebody running down the hallway. They're still running, they're still shooting. Sandy Hook school, please."

Town officials released the audio clips Wednesday.  We'll tell you more at 5.

7. On a much lighter note, we've put together a playlist celebrating timeless seasonal favorites and some not-so-traditional new favorites to help you rock around the Christmas tree. So, grab your computer, a mug of hot chocolate, a comfy place on the couch, and enjoy!

Here's the link to our live stream on KLTV.com for those of you who aren't near your tv today! We'll be there today at 4, 5 and 6 with your latest and most accurate news and weather!

We'll see you soon,
