Local standouts help in EMCC's title run

When the protected lists were taken away for Mississippi JUCO football a few years back, it opened up new opportunities for high school players to play at different colleges around the state. One of the biggest benefactors has been East Mississippi Community College, with their ability to recruit top talent.

The Lions are on the verge of their 2nd national title in the past 3 years as they prepare for the championship game this Sunday in the Mississippi Bowl. Helping them in this years run, a trio of local high school standouts that chose EMCC as their college destination.

Demetrius Cain, the reigning FOX40 Sports Deck player of the year, chose EMCC after leaving Hazlehurst. As a true freshman he was immediately a starter at linebacker and has 54 tackles this season, along with 3 interceptions.

David Mahaffey left Brandon for Scooba last year and also became a freshman starter on the offensive line.

Joining those two freshman, is sophomore cornerback A.J. Stamps. Once a record-setting receiver at Vicksburg, Stamps is now a highly recruited defensive back who has 46 tackles and 4 interceptions.

These 3 have helped EMCC to an 11-0 record in one of the most dominating seasons in Mississippi JUCO history.

#2 East Mississippi will play #1 Georgia Military on Sunday at 2pm at Biloxi Indian Stadium for the national title.
