Playoff football fever hits Albany

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

High school football playoff fever is hitting south Georgia hard, as it always does.

Four area schools are preparing for first round showdowns Friday night.

Two region champs, Lee County and Westover, will host foes from around the state.

The Trojans host Effingham County, while Liberty County will meet the Patriots.

The Monroe Tornadoes will be on the road at Wayne County.

Over in GISA, the Deerfield-Windsor Knights host Mount de Sales, who they defeated 14-13 earlier this season.

For every team, the intensity ratchets up during the playoffs, but teams try to focus on having a good week of practice.

"A lot of learning this week," says Monroe senior QB Charles Stafford. "We're not that physical, more learning because its a whole different team and we have to get used to it."

"Our kids have done a good job every week of trying to improve, focusing on that next opponent," says Lee County head coach Dean Fabrizio. "We're trying to keep that same pattern this week. But there's no doubt they realize its playoff time."

You can catch all the highlights from this week's playoff action Friday night on the Locker Room Report.

The Lufkin Panthers have not made it past the first round of the football playoffs since 2012. The team this year has a different feel to it and is hopeful that stat will be erased Friday night when they host Rockwall-Heath in the Bi-District Round of the 6A playoffs.
