TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
East Texas Schools are putting a new concussion test in place to protect student athletes, thanks to an almost $10,000 donation by Wells Fargo.
The screening is called the ImPACT Test. The test assesses athletes' cognitive levels, testing things like memorization and recollection. This test creates the athlete's cognitive baseline, which can be compared to future tests if the student experiences any type of head trauma.
The Tyler Independent School District will offer the test to their athletes thanks to Debbie Kober of Wells Fargo.
Kober said her daughter experienced a severe concussion, and since then Kober has become an advocate in implementing the program.
"She lost her sense of taste, smell, and touch. She lost her balance and her memory. She didn't know her left from right anymore," said Kober. "You don't have any clue on what kind of impact it has on your life until you've experienced it."
The test helped East Texas football player Johnny Spitzer who suffered a concussion right on his home field.
"I remember just kind of waking up, and watching the other guys out there. I was like, 'What am I doing over here?'" said Johnny.
Grace Community High School Athletic Director Devin DeLaughter saw Johnny get hit, and says he was immediately attended to on the sideline using the impact test.
"We have a lot of technology on our sideline whether it be through iPhone apps or our iPad. We did cognitive testing on Johnny, and we used that information with the ImPACT testing that he did previously to compare those numbers," said DeLaughter.
Johnny's father, Steve Spitzer, witnessed his son's hard hit and recovery. Steve says the impact test has helped put his mind a little more at ease.
"If there hadn't been those protocols in place, then there would have been a lot more worry and anxiety," said Steve.
600 Tyler ISD athletes have already taken the impact test.
