Crisp Academy's Mitchell signs with Mercer

CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Crisp Academy star Madi Mitchell is one of the best basketball players in southwest Georgia, and one of the very few chasing a fourth straight state title.

Now she is officially a Mercer Lady Bear.

The star forward signed her national letter of intent Wednesday at the school.

Mitchell has led the Lady Cats to three consecutive GISA Class A state titles, and will likely score 3,000 points before her career in Cordele is all said and done.

When it does come to a close, she'll make her way to Macon, something she's wanted to do from the first time setting foot on the Mercer campus.

"It fit me academically and athletically. And I love the coaches," she says. "So it was one visit and that was it."

Mitchell adds the similarities between the Lady Bears and the Lady Wildcats helped her make the decision.

"They like to go inside and that's what we do here," the senior forward says. "They like to run the floor and that's what we do here also, so I think it was just a good fit all around."

Mitchell and the Lady Cats begin their quest for a fourth straight title Tuesday at a tournament in Statesboro.

With the smallest enrollment in District 17-5A, and really across the entire classification, Lindale could use that as an excuse for a sub-par season. But under defensive coordinator, turned head coach Chris Cochran, that won't be the case.
