Stolen Mail, Suspect In Custody

Smith County resident Robert Lowell Duren was arrested yesterday afternoon. Duran faces a federal charge of mail theft and a state charge of identity theft.

He's accused of stealing mail from dozens of Smith County residents. Deputies confiscated hundreds of pieces of mail, including utility bills, credit cards, and bank statements. That mail is in addition to mail found in Duren's car last week that's also suspected stolen.

Smith County Constable, Frank Creath, says Duren allegedly tried to use a few of the stolen credit cards but was denied because they had not been activated. Authorities are now investigating whether Duren has used any other victims' personal information.
