An East Texas trade days show had a veterans appreciation theme. Saluting veterans was on display at trade days at the Longview fairgrounds. Patriotic and service hats were common, and veterans were openly thanked and recognized for their service by visitors. One young man on hand, had just come back from marine corps basic training , and was thanked by many for his service as if he were a hardened combat veteran. For many it was a welcome recognition.
"Flags are displayed all over town, that means a lot to me. To have other fellow veterans and in some ways I feel that they've done a whole lot more than I have," says navy desert storm veteran Martin Ybarra.
"Its amazing. Just knowing I'm bearing the people that fought before me on my shoulders, and people just walk up to me even though I'm 18 , and shake my hand and tell me thank you," says 18 year old marine Dalton Jumper of Longview.
