Mercy Health moves patients to West Side hospital

GREEN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Mercy Health West Hospital welcomes their first patients on Sunday, November 10.

Mercy Health officially cut the ribbon October 15. The hospital features several new services not previously offered in the area, including a heart center, cancer center, family birth center, women's center and a comprehensive orthopaedic's program.

The first patients were transferred to Mercy Health West Hospital early Sunday morning around 7 a.m.

Around 70 patients were taken from the Mercy facilities in Mt. Airy and Western Hills to the new building in Green Township.

Signs along North Bend Road are welcoming the hospital to the area, too.

"This is the end of a long road of planning, but it really is just the beginning, or kind of a re-energizing of our mission of serving the community on the west side of Cincinnati," said Kelly Martin, Regional Director of Marketing and Communications for Mercy Health.

Sitting next to I-74, it's hard to miss.  The 250-bed hospital sits on about 60 acres of land with a price tag around $260 million.

"A much-needed upgrade from the one here in Mt. Airy.  It'll be nice, nice having it convenient and close," said Larry Russo, who lives in Monfort Heights.

Russo has spent his whole life in the area.  He's not just happy about the hospital being so close.  Though it's too early to tell its economic potential for the area, he says the hospital has already created a boom since breaking ground in 2010.  He's eager to see that continue.

"I think it already has.  Obviously, the construction that went on there, plus the jobs that it brought to the area for the construction.  A lot of the restaurants and stores getting the influx of money," Russo told FOX19.

The good economic news could continue.  Officials say they've heard about plans in the works for new restaurants coming to the area.

"That's really exciting for us.  We want to be a good partner in every community that we're in.  We really pride ourselves on being that engaged, supportive partner," Martin added.

As for the Mercy facilities in Mt. Airy and Western Hills, each will have a medical office building, and Western Hills will still have an emergency department among other things, for now.

As for the future of those two hospitals, a spokesperson for the hospital tells FOX19, "There are parties interested in the properties."
